Different search surfaces

Google Maps Shows My Business, but AI Search Does Not. Why?

Why visibility in Google Maps, traditional search and AI-powered search can differ—and how a local business should measure each surface.

Maps and AI Search solve different jobs

Google Maps and local results are built heavily around business entities, location and local intent. AI Mode and AI Overviews can answer broader, more complex questions by issuing related searches across subtopics and surfacing supporting links. That means the same business can be prominent in one experience and less visible in another.

Keep the Business Profile accurate anyway

Google explicitly recommends keeping Business Profile information up to date as part of its guidance for AI search. Your category, services, hours, location or service area, photos and contact information should accurately reflect the real business.

Your website adds context the profile cannot

The website can explain the business in far more depth than a Maps listing: individual services, locations, case studies, project examples, FAQs and specialized expertise. That content gives search systems additional information to understand when the business is relevant to a more specific question.

Measure AI visibility separately

Google Search Console now includes a dedicated Generative AI performance report. Use it alongside traditional Search Console performance and Business Profile metrics. One dashboard answers how the website is appearing in AI features; another tells you how customers are interacting with the local profile.

Do not treat one manual prompt as a ranking report

AI responses can vary based on wording, context, location and the system being used. A single test such as “best plumber near me” is not enough to diagnose visibility. Look for patterns across real queries, Search Console data and the quality of the underlying business information.
