Start with Search Console, not guesswork
Google introduced a dedicated Generative AI performance report in Search Console in 2026 and expanded it worldwide. That gives site owners a direct way to see whether URLs from their site are receiving impressions in Google’s generative AI experiences.
For a small business, the first useful checks are simple:
- Is the site verified in Search Console?
- Are the important service pages indexed?
- Do any pages appear in the Generative AI report?
- Which pages are earning impressions?
- Is visibility growing over time?
What if the report is empty?
An empty report is not a diagnosis by itself. New domains can take time to build history, and Google does not guarantee that an indexed page will be shown in AI features—or even in standard results for every query.
Before chasing “AI SEO hacks,” make sure the fundamentals are strong: crawlability, useful service pages, clear business information, original content, internal links and a good page experience.
What should a local business improve first?
For most local businesses, the highest-value work is still the same work that makes the website useful to customers: explain your services clearly, show real proof, make location and service-area information accurate, keep your Google Business Profile current, and answer the questions customers actually ask.
Google’s own guidance says existing SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode. There is no special AI-only markup required.
A simple monthly visibility check
- Open Search Console and review indexing.
- Check the Generative AI performance report.
- Record which pages are earning impressions.
- Review the queries and service topics customers are asking about.
- Improve one high-value page instead of mass-publishing thin articles.
That gives you a measurable system instead of trying to test your business manually in dozens of prompts.
