AI search still needs sources
Google says pages shown as supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. OpenAI likewise says public websites can appear in ChatGPT search when they are accessible to its search crawler. In other words, AI search changes the interface, but it does not eliminate the need for useful source material.
Your website is the source you control
A Google Business Profile, social page or directory listing can be useful, but those platforms control the format and rules. Your website is where you can clearly explain services, locations, process, pricing approach, case studies, FAQs, team information and next steps in one place.
The website is also where discovery becomes action
Being mentioned in an answer is only part of how a customer decides who to trust and contact. A strong site gives the customer somewhere to verify the business, see real proof, understand the offer, request a quote, book an appointment or make contact. That role becomes more important—not less—when customers discover businesses in more places.
What changes in the AI-search era
The goal is not to create a site “for robots.” Google recommends the same fundamentals it has long emphasized: technically accessible pages, original and useful content, clear internal linking, quality images and video where relevant, and accurate business information. For local businesses, that means making the site more specific and more useful rather than publishing large volumes of generic articles.
A practical minimum for a local business website
- A clear homepage explaining what the business does and where it serves.
- Dedicated pages for genuinely distinct services.
- Real proof: projects, photos, reviews, case studies or credentials.
- Accurate contact and service-area information.
- A clear next step: call, form, booking or quote request.
- Search Console and indexing set up correctly.
