Why business owners are hearing about llms.txt
As AI search has grown, new files, acronyms and “GEO” tactics have appeared quickly. llms.txt is one proposed way to give language-model systems a simplified map of website content. That does not mean major search systems require it.
Google has been unusually clear
Google updated its documentation in June 2026 to clarify that llms.txt files are not needed for Google Search and have no positive or negative impact on visibility or rankings. Google recommends focusing on foundational SEO and useful, original content instead of unnecessary AI-specific files.
OpenAI uses a different mechanism for search discovery
OpenAI says websites that want to be discoverable in ChatGPT search should make sure they are not blocking OAI-SearchBot. Its publisher guidance points to robots.txt and crawler access; it does not require an llms.txt file for ChatGPT search visibility.
What should a small business do instead?
- Make sure important pages are crawlable and indexable.
- Write clear, specific service and location information.
- Publish real proof and useful answers customers cannot get from generic content.
- Keep Google Business Profile information current.
- Use Search Console to monitor indexing and generative-AI visibility.
- Allow the search crawlers you want accessing the site.
When could llms.txt still make sense?
You may choose to maintain one for another service or internal workflow that explicitly supports it. Just do not treat it as a shortcut to Google rankings or as a substitute for the website work customers and search systems actually use.
